An app to help seniors "age in place" by promoting prevention of chronic illness and proactive health management

My team for this 4-week Hackathon is originally composed of myself, 1 Business Analyst and 2 backend developers; however, we quickly lost the Business Analyst in week 1 and became a team of 3. As the only designer in the team, I was responsible for UX research and product ideation in the first 2 weeks and prepared for a 5-min pitch video in the last 2 weeks, while the developers would focus on the technical development in the latter half. Unfortunately at the halfway point, we lost 1 developer and remained as a team of 2; my team member and I decided that I had to develop a more presentable prototype on Figma because we wouldn't have time to complete coding the final product. At the same time, we had to bring on a graphic designer to the team to help us with the pitch video. I quickly pivoted to the new plan and onboarded a new member. Throughout the whole process, I was leading my team members from setting up project timelines to developing product vision and presenting the final product. Other than UX Research and UX/UI Design, I was also in charge of producing and editing the final 5-min pitch video below.
What's the Context?
Ageing population is a global challenge. In the US and Canada, 1 in 5 people is a senior, and this will increase to 1 in 4 people in the next 2 decades. 73% of Canadian seniors and 80% of American seniors have at least 1 chronic disease. And chronic diseases account for over 60% of all deaths and 95% of health care costs among seniors. However, at least 80% of heart disease, stroke and diabetes and 40% of all cancers are preventable!
Create a product that utilizes emerging technologies
(e.g. Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, 5G, Biometrics (Fingerprint scans), Virtual Reality (VRheadsets), Augmented Reality (Pokemon Go), Graph DB, Digital Twin, 3D printing, robotics, etc.)to help seniors to improve quality of life and "age in place".
"Age in place" means to address seniors needs in the following areas:
- Stay Independent - physical, mental and financial freedom
- Safe Space - reduce environmental risks, support mobility
- Long-team Health - keep treatable health issues in check and identify new risks early
- Social Connection - Sustain relationships with friends and family to maintain mental health
Why is it A problem?
The healthcare system focuses on reactive care in the context of acute illness, not for chronic diseases. Healthcare professionals rely on patients to contact the system when they have noticeable symptoms. Less than 1% of health care dollars are spent on prevention to improve overall health.
Lack of Empowerment in Patients
Patients are passive recipients of treatments or other interventions mandated by professionals.
Lack of Personalized Solution
Clinical visits or encounters are symptom/treatment-focused as opposed to holistic/root-cause/patient-centred.
Predictive Care & Prevention
Using machine learning data algorithms to predict health risks. Suggest lifestyle changes to prevent onset of chronic illness.
Proactive Health Management
Empower patients to take proactive control of their health by building their own care team and having their health records in their hands at all times.

Develop tailored solutions for different individuals to not only provide immediate treatment but also solve the root of the problem.

In case of emergency, the app uses Multi-Access Edge Computing to reduce latency and response time, allowing ambulances to receive emergency calls faster without the fear of outages somewhere between the core network and back end server

Integration with Google Cloud features
- Optical Character Recognition (OCR) - image to text function to help users upload any data from paper charts easily.
- Speech to Text - speech to text function to help users to input information quickly, especially during medical emergencies.
- Language Support - to close the education gap due language barriers among different minority groups, MotivAge will use Google Translate to support content display in users’ preferred languages.
Integration with Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
In the future, to achieve a seamless flow of health data, MotivAge should be integrated with various Electronic Medical Record systems to make importing data easier and have real-time updates from clinicians and patients. A network of data will allow healthcare providers from different organizations to exchange patients’ data more efficiently and provide higher quality care collaboratively
